Video calls

INFO

For help, ask in #help on our Discord or open an issue on GitHub. Please add what you tried and what the setup page or docker logs wa-classic shows.

WARNING

Video calls are in development. They are not part of WA Classic yet, and we can't promise they ever will be.

Voice calls work well. Video calls are much harder, and they are being worked on. In tests, a video call from an old iPhone to a real WhatsApp already connects, both people see each other, and the sound works. But it isn't good enough yet.

What's still wrong

  • The picture from the old iPhone is choppy. The other phone only shows it like 5 to 7 pictures a second, even though WA Classic sends about 30. Why is still unclear.
  • There's a delay. The old iPhone can't make WhatsApp's video format itself, so the bridge converts every picture, in both directions. That takes time.
  • WhatsApp's video calls aren't documented. Everything has to be found out by testing, and WhatsApp can change it any time.
  • The old cameras are small. WA Classic sends 352 × 288 pixels. The iPhone 3GS has no front camera and a slow processor.
  • Short Wi-Fi drops make the picture freeze for a moment.
  • Turning the iPhone sideways and switching cameras need more testing.
  • Away from home, video calls haven't been tested at all.

Will they come?

Maybe. If video calls get good enough, they'll come in an update, and Cydia will offer it. If not, WA Classic stays with voice calls.

INFO

WA Classic has no Video Call button for now. If someone calls you with video, you can answer: the call runs as a voice call, and they don't see you.

WA Classic is an unofficial client and not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to WhatsApp or Meta.
