No jailbreak yet?
WA Classic needs a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch with Cydia. If yours isn't jailbroken yet, Legacy iOS Kit is all you need. It jailbreaks every device and iOS version WA Classic supports, and it can put an older iOS on the device first if needed. It runs on a Mac or Linux and takes about 10 to 30 minutes.
WARNING
Only download Legacy iOS Kit from its GitHub page, never from random sites or YouTube links. A jailbreak never costs money.
1. Check your device
On the iPhone, open Settings › General › About and look at Version.
| You have | What to do |
|---|---|
| iOS 4.3 to 6.1.6 | Jailbreak it as it is |
| iOS 7 or newer | Restore to iOS 6 first if your device can, or wait for the iOS 7 to 10 version |
| iOS 4.2 or older | Restore to a newer version first |
2. Jailbreak with Legacy iOS Kit
- Download Legacy iOS Kit from its GitHub page and follow the setup there.
- Connect the device with a cable and start Legacy iOS Kit.
- Choose Jailbreak Device to jailbreak the iOS you have, or Restore/Downgrade to put another iOS on it. Legacy iOS Kit only shows what works for your device.
- When it's done, open Cydia once and let it finish setting up. That can take a few minutes and a restart.
What we know works:
- iPhone 4S: restore to iOS 6.1.3, no saved files needed.
- iPhone 4: iOS 6.1.3.
- iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4th generation: iOS 6.1.6.
- iPhone 5: iOS 6 with a tethered jailbreak. After every restart it has to be started from the computer with Legacy iOS Kit.
DANGER
Restoring erases everything on the device. Back up first if there's anything on it you want to keep.
Tethered or untethered?
- Untethered: the jailbreak stays after a restart. Nothing extra to do.
- Tethered: after every restart the device needs the computer to boot jailbroken. WA Classic works fine, but open it once after each boot so notifications work again.
